Our Origins
In 1994, Lynton Lasers Ltd was formed by a group of PhD physicists working at The University of Manchester. During the development of one of the world’s first Q-switched tattoo removal lasers, the team noticed the exciting applications of the technology for aesthetic and medical practitioners. What followed was the launch of the world’s only Aesthetic laser company to be formed from an academic facility university.
Managing Director Jon Exley explains that their IPL technology was also developed when he was asked to do a PhD at the Physics department at Manchester. “The PhD was to consider whether we could treat skin lesions with a broadband light source instead of laser, which was traditional at the time. And so, I studied for four years and investigated how light interacts with tissue and how we can treat different things with a flashlamp based device. That was the start of IPL for Lynton and was in fact, one of the first IPL devices ever developed globally and the only IPL that has come from a real academic institution. There have been commercial developments since then of course and our IPL has got better and better over the years, but the technology was founded on that academic research”.
