Why Pulse Duration and Thermal Relaxation Time Matters

When choosing any piece of equipment for your business, the two most important factors to consider are efficacy and return on investment. No matter what the cost of a device, if it fails to achieve the results your clients expect it won’t add value to the business. Alternatively, a device that generates amazing results but comes with an exorbitant price tag makes it almost impossible to run at a profit. A truly effective IPL device is defined by three main considerations: Wavelength, Fluence and Pulse Duration. It isn’t enough to meet just one or two of these criteria, to ensure maximum results all three factors are required to be at the optimum levels.

While choosing the correct wavelength for a particular treatment is important, it is also critical to have control of how the light is delivered into the skin. This is determined by the fluence (power) of the device and it’s the ability to manipulate the pulse duration and thermal relaxation times that ultimately determines the success of your results on a range of treatments. For example, removing a thin vein or a fine, lighter colour hair requires a very short pulse duration, ideally a train of sub-millisecond pulses. Alternatively, targeting a thick, dark hair requires a longer pulse duration. Lynton IPL devices provide full control of Wavelength, Fluence, Pulse Duration and thermal relaxation time.

Extensive research has also shown that a lack of control of pulse duration and thermal relaxation time, limits the ability to clear certain targets and therefore meet the expectations of your clients.

Most IPLs don’t operate in this way, the standard competitor device uses only two pulses that are fixed and unable to pulse below 4 milliseconds. They also lack the ability to manipulate the thermal relaxation time between pulses which severely limits the kind of results these devices can achieve.
